So you’ve been given the title of Maid of Honor, but what exactly does that mean? If you feel like you’ve been thrown into the deep end, with not a clue what you have been put in charge of, panic not! In terms of your responsibilities leading up to the big day, we’ve got you covered.
Pre-Wedding
Prior to the big day you have a lot to do, not to scare you or anything! As the Maid of Honor, you will be the Bride’s chief assistant and organiser, so get your notebooks and planners at the ready.
HELP WITH PRE-WEDDING TASKS
From the colour scheme to lending a hand with the invitations and save the dates, you need to be willing and ready to help the Bride make those all important decisions (but don’t be too opinionated or else you will have a Bridezilla on your hands!)
DRESS SHOPPING
Probably the most important part of any wedding is the dress. This is the difference between the Bride being happy or disappointed on her special day, so it is your job to ensure that she finds the perfect dress. But that’s not all. You need be there to attend all those shopping trips (you know you want to!), whether it’s for the Bride, the bridesmaid, or your own dress.
HOST A BRIDAL SHOWER
To make any Bride feel extra special, throwing a bridal shower is the best way to go. A chance to get all the gang together for some well needed gossip, it is also a great way for you to meet the rest of the girls (or guys) and to have some general girly fun.
PLAN AND THROW THE HEN PARTY
One of the biggest tasks you will be responsible for is organising the all-important hen party. This is your chance to be as creative and as daring as you want, but keep in mind that this isn’t your hen party, so keep the Bride in your thoughts at all times. Think about whether it would be more exciting to go abroad or to stay centred in the UK, and then decide on the activities you think the Bride would love. To make your planning less stressful, we can help you organise the greatest hen party of the century!
ON THE DAY
Your tasks don’t just end here however! You are just as important on the big day as leading up to it. The responsibilities during the day are to ensure that everything goes to plan and to keep the Bride smiling throughout.
LEAD THE BRIDESMAID TROUPE
As Maid of Honor, you are in charge of directing the bridesmaids to follow the Bride as she glides down the aisle; you will lead them and ensure they look their best for photographs.
SIGN MARRIAGE LICENSE
In order for the Bride and Groom to be official, they must have at least two witnesses. It will be yours and the Best Mans’ responsibility to sign the marriage license, but don’t worry – this is the only boring bit, we promise!
MAKE SURE THE BRIDE EATS
It is vital that the Bride keeps her energy levels up during the evening, as there will be lots of dancing and greeting guests on her checklist. Although she may not feel like she has the time to stuff her face, you need to make sure that she does eat something. After all, you don’t want to have to deal with a hungry, grouchy Bride!
OTHER TASKS YOU (MIGHT) HAVE TO DO
- Keep a record of gifts received;
- Dance with the Best Man;
- Take the dress if the happy couple are leaving straight after the reception;
- Hold the Bride’s bouquet during the exchange of vows.
